Response to prompt 2 for Delpit article

Teaching students acceptance of other cultures and traditions of communication is a noble undertaking, but it is not likely that our society will become completely unbiased any time in the near future. It is important to work toward that goal, but in the meantime, all students need to be instructed in the ways of speaking and writing that will earn them respect in life and the ability to be taken seriously by those in power. The most important tool we have right now is the ability to give underprivlidged students the language that will allow them to accomplish what they want in our flawed society.

True. While the goal is lofty and noble, the facts is the facts right now. In able to succeed in our society, unfortunate as it may be, people must abide by the rules of the system in power.

You definitely highlight all the right points and I agree completely. It is unfortunate that our society is flawed, but that's the way it is. I don't believe we should ignore acceptance, but teaching students the tools necessary for success is vital to competing with others in the real world right now. Further, I believe that teaching both acceptance and the ability to use the language of power would allow students to perform at their maximum potential, rather than choosing one and ignoring the other.

Honestly, I don't think that our society will ever be truly unbiased no matter how much we teach acceptance in schools. There are so many external sources that tell people everyday that this type of person, culture, race, etc. is inferior to another. Like you said, all we can really do is provide everyone with the same basics that will help them learn how to speak and write in order to be taken seriously in the society.
